A review of potential economic mineral resources in offshore Nigeria OceanDocs
Ibe, A.C..
Previously published data and preliminary indications from research now in progress suggest the possible occurrence in offshore Nigeria of economically viable deposits of placer minerals (including heavy minerals), sand and gravel, phosphorite, glauconite, polymetalic manganese nodules etc. In addition, new stratigraphic evidence indicates the existence of potentially rich petroleum plays associated with a Tertiary canyon system in water depths beyond the limits of present exploitation. Based on the comparative geology of similar occurrences in better explored continental margins and ocean basins elsewhere, the possible origin, abundance and distribution of these resources are adduced. A brief assessment of the technology relevant to their discovery and...

Analysis of slope failures in submarine canyon heads: An example from the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Gaudin, Mathieu; Berne, Serge; Canals, Miquel; Urgeles, Roger; Lafuerza, Sara.
To improve understanding of evolution of submarine canyons, a three-dimensional slope-stability model is applied to Bourcart Canyon in the western Gulf of Lions in the Mediterranean Sea. The model builds on previous work by Chen and others, and it uses the upper bound theorem of plasticity to calculate the factor of safety of a kinematically admissible failing mass. Examples of three-dimensional failure surfaces documented in the literature were used to test the model formulation. Model application to Bourcart Canyon employed the results of a detailed stratigraphic analyses based on data acquired by swath bathymetry, sub-bottom profiling, high-resolution seismic reflection surveys, and piston coring. The sediment layers were also characterized using...

Description and modeling of polyurethane hydrolysis used as thermal insulation in oil offshore conditions ArchiMer
Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Choqueuse, Dominique; Melot, D..
Polymers are widely used for passive thermal insulation coatings on steel pipe in offshore oil and gas production. In this industry, structures used in deep sea have to be reliable, as they are in service for more than 20 years in a very severe environment: sea water, hydrostatic pressure and temperature gradient. One of the main questions is how to test and predict the lifetime of such structures in the laboratory? This study presents one approach that has been developed to characterize and predict the degradation of polymers used as thermal insulation materials. This paper is dedicated to polyurethane (polyether based) degradation in sea water at high temperature. Ageing has been performed in natural sea water under hydrostatic pressure at temperatures...

Durability of polydicyclopentadiene under high temperature, high pressure and seawater (offshore oil production conditions) ArchiMer
Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Choqueuse, Dominique; Paris, Marc; Recher, G.; Zimmer, Celine; Melot, D..
In the offshore industry polymer coatings are widely used to ensure thermal insulation of steel pipes, and to avoid over-cooling of the hot oil inside. Because of very severe service conditions (i.e. high temperature, high pressure and presence of seawater) and an expected life time of 20 years, durability of these coatings is a major issue for this industry. Polypropylene and polyurethane are often used for this application, nevertheless these polymers have some limitations in terms of processing time for polypropylene and maximum service temperature for polyurethane. Polycyclopentadiene (pDCPD) shows good processing characteristics and low thermal conductivity, so this polymer could be a good alternative coating in the offshore industry, but the...

EC Project: System of Industry Metocean data for the Offshore and Research Communities (SIMORC). OceanDocs
Vladymyrov, Vladimir.
Metocean in situ data are an important category of oceanographic and marine data, comprising observed parameters like sea level, waves, currents, sea temperature, conductivity, air temperature, air pressure, and wind. A very substantial volume of metocean in situ data is collected by or under contract to major oil & gas companies. This is done all over the world and over many years a large volume of data sets has been acquired, often at substantial cost. These data are currently managed by the metocean departments of the oil & gas companies and stored in various formats. They are exchanged on a limited scale between the oil & gas companies. Despite various industry co-operative joint projects, there is not yet a common awareness of available...

Gullfaks C offshore operation: Use of an hybrid team in subsea construction work: The Gullfaks "C" and oseberg north projects (use of the ROV). ArchiMer
Rougier, R.
Installation and tie-in using tig automatic hyperbaric welding of 3 expansion loops to the Gullfaks "C" gravity base platform at 220 meters in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Operation performed from a dynamically positioned diving support vessel using divers and construction ROV during the summer 1989. Facing the technological challenge created by the deep diving aspects, the technical difficulties of doing welding operation at this depth, and the tight commercial constraints, a review of the tasks was conducted to optimize and reduce the offshore time, leading to innovations in the procedures selected to perform the work: Use of a working ROV, assisted by an observation vehicle, to carry out subsea tasks traditionally reserved for construction...

Offshore mollusc production in the Mediterranean basin ArchiMer
Danioux, Christian; Bompais, Xavier; Paquotte, Philippe; Loste, Claudine.
In the Mediterranean basin, offshore mollusc production takes place mainly in France and Italy. Its recent development stems from the limited potential of lagoons and ponds, and centres mainly on mussel production. Suspension culture technologies are described and compared with those used in the Atlantic. Some information is given on the production systems and a short economic study demonstrates the profitability of these shellfish farming activities, in spite of the many risks involved and their relatively low profit margins.

In the Mediterranean basin, the offshore mollusc production takes place mainly in France and Italy. Its recent development is the consequence of the small size of lagoons and ponds, and it is principally centred on the mussel. The farming technologies on long lines are described and compared with those used in the Atlantic. Some information is given on the production systems and a short economic study demonstrates the profitability of these shell farming activities, in spite of the many risks involved, but also their relatively low profit margins. Seasonal changes of chemical contamination in coastal waters during sediment resuspension ArchiMer
Bancon-montigny, Chrystelle; Gonzalez, Catherine; Delpoux, Sophie; Avenzac, Muriel; Spinelli, Sylvie; Mhadhbi, Takoua; Mejri, Kaouther; Hlaili, Asma Sakka; Pringault, Olivier.
The potential of remobilization of pollutants is a major problem for anthropogenic ecosystems, because even when the anthropogenic source of pollution is identified and removed, pollutants stored in sediments can be released into the water column and impact pelagic communities during sediment resuspension provoked by dredging, storms or bottom trawling. The objectives of the present study were to assess the changes observed in the chemical composition of the water column following resuspension of a polluted marine sediment and the consequences for the chemical composition of adjacent marine waters according to season. For that purpose, an experimental sediment resuspension protocol was performed on four distinct occasions, spring, summer, fall and winter,...

The experience of offshore marine fish farming in France ArchiMer
De La Pomelie, C; Paquotte, Philippe.
A natural endowment of three coast lines with different structures, of numerous rivers coming from mountainous regions and of different climatic conditions has enabled France to develop one of the first European aquaculture sectors in terms of volume with almost 300 000 tonnes in 1996. This development has been based on a wide range of species and on a wide range of techniques. Intensive marine fish farming has been developing during the last decade only, after many years of stagnation due to the lack of reliable technology for species adapted to French climate. Techniques of production are very diverse. Although earth ponds and race-ways are used only by 25% of the marine fish farms, this technique accounts for 40% of the production. On the contrary, many...

Use of ROV's in operation of EAN underwater installation in the North Sea. ArchiMer
Ricci, F.
The purpose of the paper is to present the state of the Art in use of ROV for assistance in offshore operations. This is done through a review of operations and gained experience during East Frigg Field diverless installation in 1988 and 10 years or under water Inspection, Maintenance and Repair (IMR) on all Fields operated by Elf Aquitaine Norge A/S (EAN). Basic requirements to the types of ROVs are given and the cost-efficiency of the operations are discussed. The potential for further development of the ROVs to replace divers for a large part of annual IMR tasks below water is addressed.
